Tokyo 2020 Weightlifting – Women’s 55kg
Diaz won gold last July 26, 2021 with a dramatic final lift in the -55kg category before celebrating wildly with her coach.
Hidilyn Diaz has become the first Olympic gold medalist from the Philippines after winning the women’s 55-kilogram weightlifting category.
Diaz overtook Liao Qiuyun of People’s Republic of China on her last lift in the clean and jerk to win with a total 224 kilograms, one more than Liao.
China had won all three events so far and was hoping to sweep the gold medals in the eight competitions its athletes have entered. Liao came into the competition as the world record holder with a total of 227kg.
Zulfiya Chinshanlo of Kazakhstan took bronze with 213kg. Chinshanlo won what was then the 53-kilogram class at the 2012 London Olympics but was stripped of her gold medal after a positive test for two banned steroids.
Behind the scene story, Hidilyn Diaz and her coach Filipino Japanese boyfriend Julius Naranjo – shared the success behind her victory and tagged as ‘I can lift, I can love’.
Her other Chinese coach Gao Kaiwen, was bashed by his Chinese community – he admits that he felt pity to watch the athlete from China to take the silver but he is fair also and happy for Hidilyn Diaz weightlifting success.
Hidilyn Diaz, would like to create an inspiring book to motivate young individuals who would also loved to build their career in weightlifting.
